As a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC (Title 32), WG-5803-10, you will maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, and inspect heavy mobile equipment, various support equipment, and special purpose vehicles such as; fuel dispensing trucks, refueling equipment, crash/structural firefighting equipment and pump trucks, forklifts, materiel handling, aircraft cargo loaders, aircraft and equipment tow tractors, large runway snow removal vehicles, aircraft de-icing equipment, sweepers, bulldozers, mobile cranes, and tactical/armored protected vehicles.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:

  • Perform body repair and corrosion control on military and commercial vehicles.
  • Perform repairs and/or replacement of body parts, locks, glass, and determine if additional repairs are required.
  • Repair or replace tires and tubes, and balance wheel assemblies.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on gasoline, diesel, and multi-fuel internal combustion engines.
  • Remove, overhaul, modify, and reinstall engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies in vehicles and equipment.
  • Analyze mechanical failures using visual, auditory, and diagnostic equipment to determine causes and extent of repair.
  • Use specialized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems and identify defective components.
  • Modify or alter parts and equipment when technical guidance is unavailable or to resolve recurring malfunctions.
  • Perform operational driving tests to determine vehicle serviceability after repairs.
  • Use welding equipment, power tools, hand tools, and other specialized equipment for vehicle repairs.
  • Inspect, maintain, and operate shop equipment and tools necessary for vehicle maintenance.
  • Test, service, and repair vehicle air conditioning systems in accordance with manufacturer and environmental guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit maintenance work orders and forms for time, labor, and parts documentation.
  • Research technical orders, commercial publications, and directives to support vehicle maintenance operations.
  • Assist with review and updates of shop instructions, technical manuals, and maintenance guidelines.
  • Provide instruction and on-the-job training in vehicle maintenance procedures and document training records.

  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of consideration for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence:

  • The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.
  • The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees.
  • The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible.
  • The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership.
  • The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens.:


Military Grades: Enlisted Only - Minimum rank requirement of AMN and May not exceed the rank of TSgt.


GENERAL EXPERIENCE: MUST possess experience or training that has provided the skill to make repairs or the ability to assist with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 Level - MUST possess experience or training leading to a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems that have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems. Knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls. Basic knowledge of electronics, sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards. Ability to repair or overhaul major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems and accessories, fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.
